Dog First Aid - Are You Prepared?
I recently spotted this fantastic article from Red & Howling which beautifully illustrates a really important thing every dog owner should know - what to do when they’re choking! Cute illustrations aside (and they really are divine) our dogs are totally reliant on us to help them navigate our crazy human world and stay safe. It’s hard enough to stop some dogs from eating stuff they shouldn’t, but it’s even harder when dogs are eating or chewing on something we think is safe, only to have things go wrong.
It’s so important to supervise dogs with toys, especially chew toys or those that might easily break into pieces that could cause choking. Personally I would never recommend rawhide chew toys for your dogs (watch this video on how rawhide is made) but even natural alternatives like bones, deer antlers and cow hooves can cause issues. Every dog is different however - some are aggressive chewers and some aren’t!
While you’re thinking about keeping your dog healthy and safe, I would HIGHLY recommend taking a Pet First Aid and Training course to learn more about other common, everyday situations where a bit of knowledge could save a furry life! It’s only a few hours and you’ll love the peace of mind in knowing more about how to react in scary situations. I know it’s horrible to think about but it’s always important to be prepared! The Pet First Aid and Training website has some great free resources to download as well - including an list of poisonous foods, plants and common household items to be aware of. Hope this post helps to inspire you to find out more and keep more of our 4-legged friends out there happy and safe :)
